Tour de Farce

TAP index

Welcome to Tinamou #27, procuded by Dave Partridge, 15 Woodland Drive, Brookline NH, 03033 (email: [email protected] ). Tinamou now appears on the web in conjunction with TAP. The web page has everything you’ll find here including maps. Go to Jim’s index page http://devel.diplom.org/DipPouch/Postal/Zines/TAP and check it out, your comments and suggestions are welcome!

Sounds like a good time was had by all at WDC. Wish I could have gone, but the one thing that can take precedence over Diplomacy won out, this was the only chance I had for a family vacation this summer. After a week in a trailer with three small children at least I felt like I’d been involved in a marathon diplomacy tournament!

DIPLOMATIC INCIDENT XIV: Sept 30/Oct 1. Boston

Come join us for some face to face play. Lots of other gaming going on as well and always a fun time. Our esteemed editor Jim usually makes it by for at least one day. If anyone needs crash space, let me know and we’ll arrange something. Gaming starts at 11AM both days, ends when we fall over.

Deadlines:

For Who’s Your Buddy, Milk and Cookies, Tour de Farce the next deadline is September 12.

For Copernicus the next deadline is September 19.

The IRG continues it’s advance, reducing Austria to one and seizing one each from France and England. Still a lack of fleets in the north though, so the English plea to be killed looks like it won’t be answered anytime soon. Where will the great bear go after Vienna falls?

England to no one in particular: Kill me, kill me now.

Italy to Germany: Ordinarily I complain about allies not

communicating, but you know what they say about people who live in glass houses!

Russia to all: Ok, my diploming was pretty pathetic this turn. I shall do better. I'm almost done going to auto races.

Breaking Away: Tour de Farce. Turn 4

First of all, mea culpa from the GM. As a number of you noticed I drew the sprint line before space 40 rather than after it. Luckily this has no effect on the points. A spread out group this time, the highest card being awarded was an 11. Goz, Jim and Rick take the early lead, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned in this game it’s that winning the first spring doesn’t mean much.

WORLD to FUZZ: No wonder that bicycle seat was getting uncomfortable!

DEATH to CARTER: I don't know; that Reagan fella looks familiar somehow.

DEATH to GM-Nirvana: Hey! No cutting in on my franchise.

(BOOB to SECOND PACKERS): I'm the only one with all four of my riders in the first pack. Are you guys ever planning to make a race of this??

GM – Boob: Think of it this way, Goz is beating you with only three riders and Rick is very close with only two. You need to improve your efficiency rating. Watch out for the horsemen too, those guys build slow but are awfully hard to stop once they get going.

(PEKUAH on THE FEMALE HAREMS OF THE OTHER TEAMS): The diversions of the women were only childish play, by which the mind accustomed to stronger operations could not be kept busy. I could do all which they delighted in doing by powers merely sensitive, while my intellectual faculties were flown to Cairo. They ran from room to room as a bird hops from wire to wire in his cage. They danced for the sake of motion, as lambs frisk in a meadow. One sometimes pretended to be hurt that the rest might be alarmed, or hid herself that another might seek her. Part of their time passed in watching the progress of light bodies that floated on the

river, and part in marking the various forms into which the clouds broke in the sky.

(RASSELAS to PEKUAH): How can they take any pleasure in their seraglio, when it is filled only with women like these?

(BOOB to HIS TEAM): We are truly balanced and thus truly great!

Pimpbot plays with his knife and the bear, well, we don't really need to say anything, do we?

Triumph - players: Poop on you all!

Nipsy - Reagan: the Late nighters are frustrated, they might NMR. They feel this is unfair, but can only blame Jar Jar.

Dr. Joyce Brothers - Imlac: tell me about your relationship with your father.

Abe Vigoda - world: hey, I was old back when the Godfather was filmed!

Abe Vigoda - Death: Nyah, nyah, can't catch me!

Jimmy Carter to Imlac: Yeah, but what has Abyssinia done for any of us lately?

[Gerald Ford picks himself up after the cab has dragged him for a while and.dusts himself off, just in time to get knocked down again, this time by tail-ender Kurt. Ford swallows the whistle again.]

Gerald Ford: TWEET!!!!

Bill Clinton: Hey guys! Wait up! Y'think it's easy to keep up with you AND stop at every McDonald's drive thru on the course?

Ronald Reagan to Kurt: Want a gun to put yourself out of your misery?

George Bush to Lance Armstrong: Hey! Aren't you in the wrong race?

Lance Armstrong to George Bush: Now that you mention it, this doesn't look like Paris.

Harry Andruschak-World: I seem to being doing quite rotten in all my BREAKING AWAY games, and it is obvious I don't have a clue as to the proper strategy. So I won't be joining another one. This does leave OUTPOST.

Who’s your buddy: Fall 1903

Who's Your Buddy animated map

Babble from the board:

England to Germany: I may need a hand here soon. If you supported me to NWY then thanks very much!

GM – England: Well, he didn’t bounce you out, does that count?

England to Norse: Go away.

Germany - France: What do you think you're doing?

Germany - England: At this rate, soon you'll have more friends than dots.

Germany - Spain: Always ready to reconsider alliances. Are you offering? I'm listening.

Germany - Icepick: I got more beer. You have no ice. Want to trade for...what do the British eat? Fish & chips?

Germany - England: Well, on the bright side, you got one of theirs...

Germany - He who waits: when your position is a little stronger, we make a go for it.

Germany - Austria: Hey, at least Munich supported you!

Germany - Italy: I hope you mean that and you finally can make joint progress east.

GM – Germany: Well, Greece was east at least.

Germany - Balkans: Now everyone is making nice-nice.

GM – Germany: Tell that to Russia.

Germany - Russia: You of course have no intentions of starting another front with me, right? Don't make me REALLY care about what's happening in the east...

Germany - Turkey: No, no footstool, either!

St. Petersburg - Constantinople: Let us parcel things out equally, you get Bulgaria and Greece and I get Rumania and Serbia. Does this sound fair to you? I am willing to demilitarize the Black Sea and keep my F Sev on guard duty forever. You need your fleets against Italy.

Russia-Scandinavia: My army in StP can be used to support any unit you wish, just let me know. The army will not leave Russia to be used against you, in fact it will not leave Russia at all unless you request it.

Russia-Germany: My people don't know what a steamroller is, they still use serf power. Can the Czar celebrate Oktoberfest with the Kaiser in Munich? Without our armies of course. The Czar just wants a good time drinking beer and partying, heaven knows the Russians don't know how to have a good time. Maybe I should give them some steam power?

France-World: It would seem that, in this variant at least, Spain is the Wicked Witch of the West, not England. Turkey remains the Wicked Witch of the East, Italy becomes the Not Very Wicked Witch of the South, and England is the Quite Pathetic Witch of the North.

England to Spain: Please don't "help" me anymore!

Turkey-Russia: If all goes well, I'll be able to build another fleet to use against the Balkans. Whether I use it against Italy as well depends on whether he fights me or starts defending himself against France and Spain. I mean, do you see whose fleet is in Tunis?

GM – Turkey: Umm.., if you want to build fleets you have to take centers!

Austria - Italy, Balkans: OK, are we together now? Let's get them!

Austria - Germany: If France is in with Russia, you're screwed. Of course, so am I.

Austria - Italy: You know, it will be very hard for Balkans to help us if he has no dots.

Balkans to Italy and Austria: Ideas? I am willing to help but we need a plan here.

GM – Balkans: Yes, a plan might have helped. (<:

Balkans to Germany: It may not be too late to stop R/T. You could help by pressuring the Polish front.

Rome-Vienna: To help rid your country of foreigners I will help you push the Germans out. If you supported me into Tyrolia it may work. Let me know what you want me to do to help you against the barbarians from the east. I don't know if we can do an A-B-I but we can try.

GM – Rome: I don’t think the Germans are the foreigners that he’s really concerned with!

Italy-Turkey: I considered your proposal.

Italy-Spain: If you mean what you say you have no business in the Ionian Sea, just like I have no business in the Western Med.

Rome-Paris: Hope you enjoy Switzerland. I have no objection to you adding it to your domain. I consider it a small price to pay for peace and friendship between us.

Game Openings:

Snowball fighting: The current game won’t last more than another round or two, sign up now and test your own backyard skills!

Perestroika Diplomacy: Add an economic twist to the classic game. Centers generate revenue, armies and fleets must be maintained, treasuries can be sacked! Rules are available on request.

Signed up: Art Schleinkofer, Phil Reynolds

Outpost: An economic game where you decide which resources to purchase and try to keep your colony viable. It’s a race to generate the most income, but resources are limited and you have to bid against the other players for them.

Signed up: Sara Reichert

Duel Diplomacy: Each player controls a single home power and bids for control of the other powers each year. Players have 12 points to spread among the neutrals, with bids submitted with spring orders. Orders can NOT be conditional on which bids the player wins. A fun way to play Diplomacy with only two people, come and give it a try.

The first of the Synchronized Tinamou Duels is off and Running. Scott Morris (The Flat Earth Society) and his subsine editor Warren Goesle (I Digress) and yours truly have begun a three way duel. Rather than run up Jim’s postage I’ll put the results up on the web site and print some brief summaries here as we go along.

Got a grudge? Start an STD! Send me your challenges.

Standard Diplomacy: Nothing new, nothing novel. The only twist to this game is that I strongly encourage players without email to join up. The long deadlines make it easier to get those negotiations in. That is not to say that I do not want people with email joining, but please do not do so unless you are prepared to negotiate fully with those people who don’t have email and rely on the Postal Service.

??? What would you like to play? I’m open to running anything, as long as you can provide me with a map and the rules and we can drum up interest. I’d be happy to run another black hole game if anyone wants to, or name your poison and we’ll see if anyone wants to challenge you.

Black Hole Diplomacy: Watch the spaces disappear and the trips to the other side of the board get shorter and shorter. No stalemate lines in this variant. Great for those who like a free for all.

Just the results please: Don’t really know what to call this one as I just came up with it. Perhaps it’s been tried before. The twist for this variant is that each season only the ending unit positions are published, not the orders. You’ll know who went where, but not who helped whom, or want may have been tried unsuccessfully.

Reader’s Choice: I’m open to anything, just send me the rules and if I think I can run it, I’ll offer it.

A plug for League of Nations. Mark Kinney’s szine is kicking off it’s first game and it looks like a good one. Lots of TAP subbers in this one, including The Boob himself. Contact Mark (his address should be in TAP somewhere) about joining up and supporting a new szine. I think he’s going to have a web site as well, get the details from him.

I need some more filler here, so I’ll apologize for not getting the Web version of Tin 26 up yet. Work and home life got very busy and I didn’t realize that anyone was depending on it. Issue 27 should be up by the time this makes it out postally and I’ll get 26 up soon as well. In the future I’ll at least get the game results up so no one gets caught out again. Doing the web stuff is fun, but it takes more time, and time is definitely a precious commodity.

Milk and Cookies – Turn 5

I screwed up last turn and did not move Twitchy in either the ending position or the map. Phil sent in his moves based on this and I can’t fault him for it, so I’m allowing the first turn move to R6, even though it would have been slightly out of range from F6.

Sara and Boob rest a while in the kitchen, but it’s too crowded with a Yeti in there too so Boob ventures back out into the yard. Northern Exposure makes a nice display on the kitchen window, and Zamboni and Jar Jar exchange presents, although Zamboni’s is much larger. Zamboni and Sweet Sara are both within 3 of the win, and Zamboni is armed with a dirigible, so expect the end soon. Sign up now for the next game!

Press

Zamboni-Snowballers: As this is during periods, I'm off the field and out of sight.

Jar Jar - Sweet Sara: Try the muffins, they're yummy!

Jar Jar - Twitchy: Watch out for that tree!

Jar Jar - Northern Exhibitionist: Is that an icicle?

Jar Jar - Boobsway: Hey - you lost 10 hp while I didn't lose any! :P

GM – Jar Jar: Zamboni just took care of that omission for you!

Jar Jar - GM: how many points to win? to place? to show?

GM – Jar Jar: 15 to win. Ask the Northern Exhibitionist about showing.

Jar Jar - Yeti: now just hold still for one minute longer..

GM – Jar Jar: He did.

Northern Exposure to All: Hey! It looks like I'm not the only one "exposed"!

Northern Exposure to Sara: Maybe you should get some tips from Yeti, and learn how to escape.

Yeti - Zamboni: Sorry, you're closest and I need points. Then again, you mighta moved ... or got voted outta the yard. Yeah, we coulda been millionaires.

GM – Yeti: Or you might miss (<: .

SS-BS: Hey little boy, let's be friends! Just to show you what a nice, wonderful, caring friend I can be; I'll trade you this Big, Fat, Brand New, and Very Shiny nickel for that thin grubby old dime of yours.

Harry Andruschak-GM: I was not aware that this was a Black Press zine, and even so most black press is from the players, not the GM. So who did that comment that appeared after the OUTPOST announcement? Or is it a secret?

GM – Harry: I don’t have the email anymore, but you sent me a general challenge. It was worded something like "challenge them" or something of the sort, not as an explicit quotable press item, so that’s the way I put it in, as a general challenge attributed, but not quoted, to you.

(BOOBSWAY to EVERYONE ELSE): Yes, Sweet Sara's boobs were totally fake. Was this any surprise?? I'm the only Boob around here!

(BOOBSWAY to ZAMBONI): Did you succeed at identifying the correct anatomical body parts on Sweet Sara??

(BOOBSWAY to SWEET SARA): There, your secret is out, so you can stop pelting me with snowballs now....

(BOOBSWAY to ZAMBONI): If you don't go in the kitchen this time, I'll eat my hat!!

GM – BOOBSWAY: Would you like a little mustard with that?

(BOOBSWAY to GM): Could be a tight battle to the wire!

GM – BOOBSWAY: Looks like Zamboni’s got the inside track, but he could miss, those dirigibles aren’t high percentage.
