Well, this is as close as it gets. The last game of the season, STL vs SF on Monday night, and the winner determines our game! Seems Rick must have bribed someone on the SF staff, after a strong first half they sent out the second team and STL staged an improbable comeback giving Rick the win with a score of 33 (out of a possible 42.5). Had SF won, Phil would have edged Rick, 32.5 to 32! Thank you all for playing, hope to see you next year.

And, just for fun, here are our scores if we'd gotten our top 3 and top 5 picks
And, just for more fun, here the best possible line up so far:
Weeks 1-4: SD and any two of MIA/NE/DEN/OAK/PHI/GB/CAR/NO/TB -- score 10
Weeks 5-8: Any three of BUF/PIT/DEN/GB/ATL/NO/TB/SF -- score 10 + 9 = 19
Weeks 8-12: NYJ, ATL and any one of NE/IND/TEN/OAK/NYG/PHI/TB/STL -- score 19 + 10.5 = 29.5
Week 13-17: TEN and any two of NYG, OAK, PHI, PIT, KAN, GB, CAR 29.5 + 13 = 42.5
Week 13
Phil makes a surge and closes to within 1/2 a point of Rick. Seems dumping Oakland for STL might not have been such a good tactic as the Raiders become the team of streaks, 4 wins, 4 losses and now 4 wins. What comes next? The Jets end their streak at 4, and the AFC east is an incredibly tight race, made all the more interesting as strong competition in the AFC South and West means that second place in the East may not be worth a wild card!
Week 11
Steve is the big winner for the week with 3 wins. In the "For What It's Worth" department, we note that since Rick's snide comment that Dave should go for all AFL East and trade in the Steelers for the Jets, the Jets are one of only four teams that have won their last three games. Guess it would have been a good trade! Note that the other teams are the equally improbable Giants, Rams and Titans. These four teams started the season with a combined 5-15 record!!
Week 10
Whether it's good or bad for the game, certainly the cap is keeping things interesting. Maybe we have too many mediocre teams, and maybe teams can afford to be good on offense and defense, but it definitely leads to interesting games, and I think I prefer it to having a few obvious top contenders and a large field of also rans. The other thing that stands out this year are the streaks. An incredible number of teams that have won or lost more than 3 in a row at some time, and several teams that have done both!
Week 8
And we are halfway through the season. Looking at our early picks for the year, NE and STL are still far down the pack, although perhaps STL is making a comeback. New England still has a lot of work to do. Pittsburgh is coming back as well. Still a lot of close games and lots of exciting football. Vick's 91 yards is better than the average of 10 teams!
Week 7
So, a New Orleans/San Diego Superbowl. I'm sure if you scroll down you'll find that I predicted that back in the first week. Just as sure as I am that by week 17 you won't find any reference to it anywhere on this page!! And with only 7 games gone, there are some teams that didn't start well that just could be back in it. Baltimore and Pittsburgh are both shaping up. Michael Vick is B A C K ! and Atlanta is tied for the top of it's division. It's a year where I'm glad I'm not a bookie! And once more I'll rail against the sudden death overtime. Four games this week into overtime. Winning the coin toss is just too much of an advantage. If you don't want to play a whole quarter, how about the first team to lead by 4? At least make them do more than one long field goal.
Week 5
Rick widens his lead as the "Bay Team" goes to town. The AFC west is going to lead to heartbreak as at least one and maybe two or three deserving teams will not go on to the playoffs. And who'd have believed the Rams still vying with the Bengals for the title of worst team. Guess they're playing for draft picks now! (Go Vikes, you can lose and get that pick!).
Week 4
And Rick, the man who "really got screwed in the draft", moves into the lead! Saint Louis is 0-4, the Chargers are 4-0. Anyone who picked that before the season started can sell me their crystal ball at any price. A tough week to watch as New England showed the holes in it's defense from injury and I rooted for both KC (as a Patriots fan) and Miama (as I want to win SFF). Chicago has another close one and Buffalo has it's THIRD overtime game.
Week 3
What a season! The Bears can always be counted on for a close game, too bad they can't always be counted on to win! The Pats show their mettle, pulling through on the strength of their offense with the defense out from injuries. The rest of defense needs to step up better though. Hard to believe but we've got 6 unbeaten teams and 3 of them weren't picked by anyone!
Time for a rule change I think. The first overtime needs to be a full 15 minutes, not sudden death. Sure, the Jets won on a kick off return, but all to often, win the coin toss, win the game. Why not play it out. Let the second overtime be sudden death.
Monday Night update
Ouch, Steve Spurrier meets the real NFL! He's got a good plan but he needs the tools to make it work and they weren't there last night.
Week 2
Another great week. Patriots blow out the Jets and have to be taken for real now. Other top picks fall left and right as Rams and Steelers are both 0-2 and the 49ers, Green Bay and Eagles (at best) are 1-1. The Bears look to repeat last season's record of pulling out close games while making Dave sweat it out. And be happy for the Wild Card system if MIA and NE keep up this pace.
Week 1
Monday Night update
And Chris's boasting holds true! As a die hard and long suffering Patriots fan I have to love the result. As holder of the Steelers in this league, I have to remind myself that they started horribly last year too and this was just TOO bad to be the real Steelers. They'll have to get it together and show there stuff, right? Right?
So far a very even distribution, although after Monday night, either Dave or Chris will gain a slight lead. A lot of squeakers as Phil's Jets pull it out in overtime with a SECOND kickoff return for a touchdown and Rick splits the results in two overtime games while Dave's Bears won in the last few seconds. Just to show that you never know, the most sought after team, STL, lost and the lowest pick, MIA won in a blowout, although perhaps the Lions can't be considered a true test of a team.
I put last year's results down at the bottom of the page to give you all a feel for
how important trades can be. Note that IND only had 6 wins, but they scored well
for Steve as he got to count 4 of them and then dropped them as they faded.
Team Selection (Only top 15 listed)
Steve Mayers:
STL, PIT, PHI, TB, GB, WAS, IND, TEN, SF, OAK, NYJ, CHI, NE, MIA, DEN
Rick Desper:
STL, NE, GB, PHI, SF, PIT, TB, OAK, CHI, WAS, DEN, TEN, NYJ, IND, CLE
Chris Lockheardt:
NE, GB, SF, PHI, CHI, TEN, DEN, NO, STL, PIT, TB, MIA, OAK, IND, NYJ
Dave Partridge:
PIT, SF, GB, STL, PHI, CHI, IND, NE, MIA, TEN, CLE, TB, DEN, DAL, NO
Phil Reynolds:
STL, PIT, PHI, GB, SF, WAS, NE, NYJ, MIA, DEN, TB, OAK, TEN, IND, CHI
For first pick, we have a three way face off between Steve, Rick and Phil all going for STL. Steve wins the die rolls. Chris gets his first pick of NE, and Dave gets PIT. Rick and Phil now drop down to their 3rd picks and get GB and PHI respectively.
For second teams, Dave, Chris, Rick and Phil square off again over SF. Rick and Phil have the advantage having lost a tie in the previous round. Phil wins the die roll and gets SF. Ricks now contests TB with Steve. With two losses Rick gets TB and Steve falls back to WAS. Meanwhile Dave and Chris both want CHI which goes to Dave on the die roll. Chris then gets his next pick of TEN.
For the last team, Rick takes OAK, Chris gets DEN and Phil gets NYJ all unchallenged. Dave and Steve both look for IND. Both have won one and lost one runoff, so we go to the dice again. Steve wins the roll and IND and Dave gets MIA.
A fairly even split out. Three players got their first pick. The farthest out was Dave with his 9th pick. Everyone had to go out to at least the 7th pick. Add the picks and the best was 14 (1+6+7) and the worst was 18 (3+7+8).
New players are welcome to join in by picking three unclaimed teams, although they will not score for any games already played.
I'll track all the teams so players can see how the unclaimed teams are doing as well as each players current score. Trades will now be accepted at any time, but will not take place until start of the second quarter (after week 4)
